gsus considers it important that our clothing is produced under the best conditions. Therefore, we’re proud to announce that we’ve signed the ‘Convenant Nederlandse Kleding en Textiel’. The Covenant aims to improve labor, environmental and animal welfare conditions in countries where Dutch companies make clothing and textiles. The next few years, gsus will work on these improvements together with more than 40 other Dutch clothing companies, government, NGO’s and trade unions.

Business Social Compliance Initiative
gsus is also affiliated with the European Organisation Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI). BSCI commits to improve the working conditions in the production of its members worldwide. Companies that are members of the BSCI implement the BSCI Code of Conduct in their supply chain. This code of conduct outlines the guidelines that companies must meet. These guidelines are based on a number of key internationally accepted guidelines, including: Conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations, UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (CEDAW).

The BSCI approach is based on the following three key activities:

  • Understanding the working conditions in factories and farms through checks (audits) by independent audit firms.
  • Offering suppliers and BSCI participants training workshops on topics such as good management, safety at work, dialogue between management and factory workers, etc.
  • Opening the dialogue with stakeholders such as governments, trade unions, etc. to influence the political and economic conditions that may stand in the way for sustainable improvement of working conditions.

BSCI is not a certification system, but a process that the supplier helps to improve working conditions step by step. The audit cycles restarts every three years to test the compliance of the required standards and the impact of the implemented improvement (Corrective Action Plan) continuously. The audits ultimately provide better working conditions, compliance with local and international regulations concerning wages and working hours, no child labor and freedom of association.
